Cyanotypes · Wells-next-the-Sea, Norfolk

Printed by the sun. Rinsed in rain.

Ottilie Marr lays seaweed, ferns and feathers from the north Norfolk shore on hand-coated paper and lets daylight make the picture. No camera, no ink, no second copy: every print is one of one.

Cyanotype on 300 gsm cotton rag, signed on the back, unframed. Oak float frames with UV glass from £120.

The process

Four steps, one afternoon of sun.

Three glass printing frames on a weathered garden table in bright sun, seaweed pressed onto pale yellow-green coated paper
  1. i

    Coat

In a dim room, two iron salts are brushed onto cotton paper and left to dry. The brush marks stay in the finished print.

  2. ii

    Lay

Weed, fronds and feathers picked up that morning go straight onto the paper, pressed flat under glass.

  3. iii

    Expose

Five to fifteen minutes in the sun, depending on the light. Where the sun lands the paper darkens; under the weed it stays pale.

  4. iv

    Wash

A rinse in rainwater clears what the light didn't touch, and the blue arrives. It keeps deepening for a day as it dries.

What collectors say

It hangs across from the window and changes all day with the light. Guests always ask if it's a photograph.

Hannah R., Norwich · bought Hawthorn, 2025

We sent Ottilie a shoebox of things from my father's garden. What came back made my mother cry, in the good way.
